England and Argentina are set to renew their long-standing football rivalry in a World Cup semi-final match in Atlanta on Wednesday. As Argentina, the defending world champions, aim to reach another final.
The rivalry between the two nations extends beyond the football pitch, influenced by political tensions, particularly around the Falklands War in the 1980s. This historical context is often referenced in football songs by Argentine fans and players.
A Rivalry Forged Over Decades
The World Cup rivalry between England and Argentina began in 1962, featuring moments of controversy, memorable goals, and red cards. Despite the intensity, England holds a slight edge in their five World Cup meetings, though it has been some time since they secured a victory in a particularly significant match between the two.
Many younger generations may not recall the full extent of this rivalry, as their last World Cup clash was in 2002. The upcoming match will be the first between the two powerhouses in 21 years.
The footballing ties between the nations date back to 1867, with British railway workers playing the first recorded match in Argentina. Influential clubs like Newell’s Old Boys and Rosario Central were founded by expatriates, and even the names of River Plate and Boca Juniors have English linguistic influences.
Key World Cup Encounters
Their first World Cup meeting took place in 1962 in Rancagua, Chile, during the group stage. England secured a 3-1 victory with goals from Ron Flowers, Bobby Charlton, and Jimmy Greaves, ultimately progressing to the quarter-finals on goal difference at Argentina‘s expense. England was later eliminated by Brazil.
The 1966 quarter-final at Wembley, where England won 1-0, is often cited as the true genesis of the rivalry. Argentina still disputes Geoff Hurst‘s winning goal, claiming it was offside. The match saw Argentina captain Antonio Rattin sent off after 33 minutes for two offences. The game was delayed for nearly eight minutes as Rattin refused to leave the pitch, reportedly asking for an interpreter. This incident is believed to have contributed to the introduction of red and yellow cards in the 1970 World Cup. England manager Alf Ramsey controversially described the Argentine side as ‘animals’ after the match.

The 1986 quarter-final in Mexico City, just four years after the Falklands War, was highly charged. Diego Maradona scored two iconic goals for Argentina in their 2-1 victory. The first, famously known as the ‘Hand of God‘, involved Maradona punching the ball past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton. The second was a remarkable solo effort, often dubbed the ‘Goal of the Century‘, where he dribbled past multiple England players. Gary Lineker scored a late consolation goal for England, but Argentina advanced and went on to win the tournament.

In the 1998 World Cup round of 16 in St Etienne, Argentina defeated England 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. The match is remembered for David Beckham‘s red card after he kicked out at Diego Simeone. Michael Owen scored a notable solo goal for England, but Javier Zanetti equalised for Argentina. Sol Campbell had a late goal disallowed for England, and Argentina ultimately prevailed in the penalty shootout.

The 2002 World Cup group stage match in Sapporo, Japan, saw England secure a 1-0 victory, with David Beckham scoring the winning goal from a penalty after Michael Owen was fouled by Mauricio Pochettino. This win was crucial for England‘s progression, while Argentina was eliminated in the group stage for the first time since 1962. England advanced to the quarter-finals before being knocked out by Brazil.
The upcoming semi-final in Atlanta will add another chapter to this storied rivalry.
