The family of South African footballer Jayden Adams has publicly addressed his sudden passing, urging the public to respect their grief amidst ongoing speculation. Adams, who recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, died on July 11 at the age of 25. No official cause of death has been announced.
His father shared with South African broadcaster eNCA that the family is struggling to cope with the loss. He described the death as untimely and expressed that while people suggest it will get easier, he believes they will simply learn to live with the pain. The overwhelming support from fans globally has been noted, with his father stating, “The whole world is reacting to Jayden’s death… we can see the love the world had for his soccer and for Jayden.”
Community Mourns a Rising Star
The midfielder’s death has sent shockwaves through South African football. Adams was widely considered one of the nation’s emerging talents, having played in all three of South Africa‘s group-stage matches during the recent World Cup. His participation on such a prominent stage made his sudden passing particularly difficult for supporters.
South Africa‘s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, appealed to the public to refrain from spreading unverified claims. In a statement, McKenzie emphasized that the cause of death had not been confirmed and asked for compassion and privacy for the family during this difficult period. He also extended condolences to Adams‘ family, teammates, and the millions of supporters who watched his career develop.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also expressed his condolences, stating that his thoughts were with Adams‘ family, friends, and teammates. He acknowledged the midfielder’s role in his nation’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign, where South Africa reached the knockout stages for the first time.
Tributes from Partner and Football Community
Aqueelah Adendorf, Adams‘ longtime partner and mother of their five-year-old daughter, shared emotional tributes on social media. Weeks before his death, she had celebrated his achievement of reaching the international stage, praising his dedication through “hard work, sacrifices, early mornings, disappointments, and moments nobody saw.”
Following the announcement of his death, Adendorf wrote, “There are no words to describe the pain I’m feeling… Rest in peace, my love. Thank you for every memory, every laugh, every hug, and every moment we shared. You were not only the love of my life but also my greatest supporter and my best friend.” She concluded her message with, “Rest easy, my angel. I love you always and forever.”
The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) confirmed Adams‘ death on July 11, describing the loss as devastating for his family, teammates, and the broader football community. The union highlighted his recent representation of South Africa at the World Cup, where he carried the hopes of the nation.
Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC in 2020 before moving to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. With Mamelodi Sundowns, he won league and African Champions League titles. During the 2026 World Cup, he featured in all three of South Africa‘s group games, starting in the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic despite learning of his grandmother’s passing the day before.
