Argentina risk FIFA punishment after Falkland Islands banner during England win celebrations

Disciplinary action looms after semi-final victory

Argentina could face disciplinary action from FIFA following their FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final victory over England. The potential action stems from players displaying a banner supporting Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands during post-match celebrations. The defending champions secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback win against Thomas Tuchel‘s England side in Atlanta, scoring two late goals to book their place in Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain.

After the final whistle, Argentina‘s players were seen celebrating with a banner that read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which translates to “The Falklands are Argentine.” This act could lead to sanctions from world football’s governing body, as similar incidents have resulted in fines in the past.

The long-standing Falklands dispute

The Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean, have been the subject of a long-running sovereignty dispute between Argentina and Britain. Argentina has consistently claimed sovereignty over the islands, which are situated approximately 300 miles off Argentina‘s east coast.

The dispute escalated into a 74-day war between the two nations from April to June 1982. This conflict resulted in significant casualties, with 655 Argentine servicemen, 255 British servicemen, and three islanders losing their lives. The historical tensions surrounding the islands have periodically resurfaced in various contexts, including sporting events.

This is not the first instance of Argentina facing repercussions for actions related to the Falkland Islands. In 2014, FIFA fined the Argentine Football Association £20,000 after players displayed a banner carrying the same message before a friendly match against Slovenia. At that time, FIFA ruled that the action violated its regulations concerning political displays and team misconduct, setting a precedent for potential future penalties.

Political reactions and team stance

Following Argentina‘s victory, Vice-President Victoria Villarruel celebrated the outcome on social media. She posted that “it wasn’t just another match” alongside a video that appeared to show Argentine soldiers. Villarruel later added, “The Falklands are Argentine. They banned bringing them to the stadium and forgot that we carry them in our blood and our hearts.” Prior to the semi-final, she had also described the match as being “about putting the invaders in their place.”

The players had previously engaged in chants referencing the Falklands, along with football legends Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi, after their dramatic 3-2 last-16 win against Egypt. However, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni had stated before the semi-final that he would not mix football and politics. He emphasised that the match was a football game and expressed respect for the historical events, calling it a “very sad period in our history.” Scaloni further noted that while remembering those involved in the conflict, it was important not to confuse the two.

The semi-final match itself, which saw England lose to late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez, was held under increased security measures. These measures were implemented due to the historical tensions between the two nations, underscoring the sensitive nature of any interactions between them. Argentina is now set to face Spain at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, aiming to become only the third nation to win back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles.
