Golden Boot Race: Messi Leads, Mbappé Hot on His Heels

Lionel Messi of Argentina currently holds the lead in the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot. This comes after a decisive performance in the semi-finals, where Argentina secured a 2-1 victory over England, advancing to their second consecutive World Cup final. Messi’s contributions in the semi-final match have placed him in a strong position to claim the award, which recognizes the tournament’s top goal scorer.
Messi entered the semi-finals tied with France‘s Kylian Mbappé, both having scored eight goals. While neither player added to their goal tally in the semi-finals, Messi’s impact was significant. He provided two assists during Argentina’s comeback against England, first setting up the equalizer in the 85th minute and then delivering a cross for the winning goal in stoppage time. These two assists increased his tournament total to four, moving him ahead of Mbappé based on the official Golden Boot tiebreaker criteria.
Golden Boot Contenders
The Golden Boot award is given to the player with the most goals in the World Cup. If players are tied on goals, the tiebreaker is the number of assists. If still tied, the player with the fewest minutes played is awarded the trophy. Currently, Messi and Mbappé are tied on goals, but Messi’s four assists give him the advantage over Mbappé’s three.
Despite Messi’s current lead, the Golden Boot race is not yet definitively decided. France and England are scheduled to play in the third-place match, providing Mbappé, Harry Kane, and Jude Bellingham with another opportunity to add to their goal tallies. Goals scored in the third-place match count towards the Golden Boot standings. Therefore, Messi will need to await the outcome of that match to see if any of his rivals can surpass him.
Other contenders who could potentially challenge for the award include Ousmane Dembélé of France and Mikel Oyarzabal of Spain. However, their chances are considered long shots unless they deliver exceptional performances in their remaining matches. Erling Haaland, who had scored seven goals, is no longer in contention as Norway has been eliminated from the tournament.
Historical Context and Current Standings
The 2026 World Cup has featured a high-scoring Golden Boot race, with Messi and Mbappé already tied on eight goals. This makes it one of the highest-scoring races in the tournament’s history. Historically, only five times has a player needed more than eight goals to win the Golden Boot, and there has never been an instance of two or more players reaching that total.
Messi’s consistent performance throughout Argentina’s title defense has been a key factor in his lead. He has contributed to Argentina’s attacking efforts in every stage of the tournament, combining his eight goals with four assists. His two assists in the semi-final also increased his career World Cup assist tally to a record 12, the highest since detailed tournament records began in 1966. He has also extended a record of either scoring or assisting in 13 consecutive World Cup matches.
While Mbappé remains the closest challenger, trailing only on assists, Kane and Bellingham would require significant scoring performances in the third-place playoff to close the gap. Messi holds the advantage heading into the final match, with Argentina set to play Spain. Another goal or assist in the final would further solidify his position in the Golden Boot race.
The Golden Boot has been won by notable players throughout history, including Just Fontaine, Gerd Müller, Ronaldo, and Miroslav Klose. Mbappé was the winner in 2022 with eight goals. No player has ever won the award twice, and Messi has yet to claim it in his career. The final match will determine the ultimate winner of the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot.
