Igp: Arrest Warrant Issued for Ex- Benazir Ahmed
What led to the arrest warrant for Benazir Ahmed?
A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed after taking cognizance of a charge sheet filed in a corruption case. This development raises questions about the accountability of high-ranking officials in Bangladesh.
The warrant was issued following a charge sheet submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on November 30, 2025. The case against Ahmed was initiated on December 15, 2024, by Hafizul Islam of the ACC, who alleged that the former IGP amassed wealth beyond his known sources of income.
Details of the allegations
Benazir Ahmed is accused of accumulating assets worth Tk15.68 crore, with Tk11.04 crore of these assets reportedly acquired beyond legitimate income sources. During the investigation, it was found that Ahmed had declared movable assets worth Tk6.45 crore and immovable assets valued at Tk5.74 crore.
However, investigators uncovered additional movable assets worth Tk7.52 crore and immovable assets worth Tk8.15 crore, suggesting a significant discrepancy between declared and actual wealth. The investigation also indicated that the funds were allegedly concealed and laundered through various accounts and businesses.
Current status and next steps
The court has declared Benazir Ahmed a fugitive and directed police to submit a report by March 30 on whether he has been arrested. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding corruption within the ranks of law enforcement in Bangladesh.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding Ahmed’s current whereabouts and whether he intends to contest the charges against him. The implications of this case could have far-reaching effects on public trust in the police and the government’s commitment to tackling corruption.
