Significance of Santiniketan in Contemporary Discourse
“Moments like these remind us that the strength of democratic institutions lies not only in law, but also in the culture of respect that surrounds them,” stated Droupadi Murmu during her address at the International Santhal Conference held at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan on March 7, 2026. This statement resonates deeply within the context of her role as India’s first tribal President and highlights the ongoing dialogue about the intersection of culture and democracy in India.
The International Santhal Conference, a gathering aimed at celebrating and discussing the rich cultural heritage of the Santhal community, faced challenges that underscored the importance of proper arrangements for such significant events. Murmu expressed her disappointment over lapses in the organization, particularly noting that the venue was shifted at the last minute due to a lack of permission. This incident serves as a reminder of the logistical hurdles that can impact cultural celebrations and the representation of indigenous communities.
Visva-Bharati University, founded by the renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore, has long been a center for artistic and cultural expression. The university’s ethos aligns with the vision of Nandalal Bose, a pivotal figure in Indian art history, who believed that art should be accessible to all. His work aimed to decolonize the Indian mind and make art as ubiquitous as the air we breathe. This philosophy continues to influence contemporary discussions around art and culture in India.
In conjunction with the conference, an exhibition titled ‘Colours of Swades’ was announced, which employs Artificial Intelligence to enhance the narrative of Bose’s works. Nidhi Choudhari, a curator involved in the exhibition, remarked, “Technology is a tool of interpretation. It helps visitors step closer into the world Bose imagined.” This innovative approach aims to bridge the gap between traditional art forms and modern technological advancements, making the art of Bose more accessible to a wider audience.
Additionally, the Haripura panels, created by Bose in 1938, are set to be displayed at the National Gallery of Modern Art from March 9 to April 9, 2026. These panels, which depict the life of the soil and the struggles of the common people, were originally intended for political gatherings, showcasing Bose’s commitment to using art as a means of social commentary. Choudhari noted, “The Haripura panels were never intended to be museum objects in the conventional sense,” emphasizing their role in engaging with the public.
The juxtaposition of Murmu’s remarks and the ongoing exhibitions at Visva-Bharati University highlights a critical moment in India’s cultural landscape. As the nation grapples with its diverse identities, the importance of respect and understanding in democratic institutions becomes ever more pronounced. The events in Santiniketan serve as a microcosm of the broader challenges and triumphs faced by indigenous communities and their representation in contemporary society.
As the International Santhal Conference concludes, the focus will likely shift to how these discussions can foster greater awareness and appreciation for the cultural narratives of India’s tribal populations. The legacy of Nandalal Bose and the ongoing efforts to integrate technology with traditional art forms will continue to play a significant role in shaping this dialogue.
