Yuvasathi: West Bengal Launches Yuva Sathi Scheme for Unemployed Youth
What is the Yuva Sathi Scheme?
The Yuva Sathi Scheme raises a critical question: how can financial assistance aid unemployed youth in West Bengal? Launched by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on March 7, 2026, the scheme provides ₹1,500 per month to unemployed individuals aged 21 to 40 who have completed their secondary education.
With around 1 crore applications received, the initiative aims to support young job seekers in their pursuit of self-reliance. This financial assistance is part of a broader strategy to enhance economic stability and social support for vulnerable sections of society.
Background and Implementation
The scheme was initially set to begin on April 1, 2026, but was rolled out earlier as a special gesture ahead of International Women’s Day. Mamata Banerjee stated, “We had earlier stated that the money would be given on April 1. But since tomorrow is International Women’s Day, as a gift, we have changed the payment date from April 1 to today (March 7).” This early launch reflects the government’s commitment to addressing unemployment in the region.
As part of the Yuva Sathi Scheme, the state government has also provided skill training to approximately 40 lakh people, with around 10 lakh already employed. Banerjee noted that the unemployment rate in Bengal has decreased by 40 percent, attributing this success to the connection between trained individuals and industrialists through the Utkarsha Bangla initiative.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, the Yuva Sathi Scheme is expected to play a significant role in reducing unemployment further and promoting economic growth in West Bengal. The government has also indicated that it will continue to focus on providing skill training and employment opportunities for the youth.
While the scheme has garnered positive attention, details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term sustainability of funding and the overall impact on the job market. As the program unfolds, its effectiveness in achieving its goals will be closely monitored.
