LAFC and L.D. Alajuelense End in 1-1 Draw

In a tightly contested match at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, LAFC and L.D. Alajuelense finished with a 1-1 tie in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16. LAFC dominated possession and shot attempts, yet failed to secure a win.

Denis Bouanga scored LAFC’s lone goal in the 56th minute, equalizing after Alejandro Bran had put L.D. Alajuelense ahead with a goal in the 43rd minute. Despite LAFC’s 28 shot attempts, only 12 were on target, while Alajuelense managed just 4 attempts, with 3 on target.

LAFC controlled the match with 76% possession and completed 700 passes compared to Alajuelense’s 224. The home side also earned 10 corner kicks against Alajuelense’s 2, showcasing their offensive pressure throughout the game.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made 2 crucial saves for LAFC, but Washington Ortega of L.D. Alajuelense stood out with an impressive 11 saves, earning him the man of the match title. “LAFC dominated every statistical category except the crucial one,” noted observers after the match.

Mark Dos Santos, LAFC’s coach, emphasized the importance of managing the first leg effectively, stating, “We have to take care of the first leg in the best way possible to put us in a position to go to a very difficult place.”

Timmy Tillman added, “It would be a great story to win Concacaf for the first time, but I think we just have to focus on every single game. It’s going to happen step by step.”

This match marks a continuation of the rivalry between LAFC and L.D. Alajuelense, who last faced each other in 2023, when LAFC advanced 4-2 on aggregate.

The second leg is set to take place next week at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Costa Rica, where both teams will look to secure a favorable outcome. Details remain unconfirmed.
