abrar ahmed — IN news

Will Abrar Ahmed be able to participate in The Hundred 2026? The answer remains uncertain as he faces international commitments with the Pakistan national team.

Abrar Ahmed was acquired by Sunrisers Leeds for £190,000 during The Hundred auction, a significant investment for the franchise. The tournament is scheduled to run from July 21 to August 16, 2026, overlapping with Pakistan’s Test series against West Indies from July 15 to August 7, 2026.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has tightened its No Objection Certificate (NOC) rules under Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, which complicates Ahmed’s situation further. As it stands, his participation in The Hundred is uncertain due to these international commitments.

Currently, Ahmed is ranked third in the ICC Rankings for bowlers, highlighting his value and potential impact on the field. However, the PCB’s stricter regulations raise questions about whether he will receive the necessary clearance to play.

Sunrisers Leeds, owned by Sun TV Network, has invested heavily in the franchise, acquiring it for approximately £100 million. The franchise also owns Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20, indicating a strong commitment to building a competitive team.

According to sources, “He might not play for the franchise as Pakistan will compete in the two-Test series against the West Indies.” This statement underscores the challenges Ahmed faces in balancing his international duties with franchise commitments.

Furthermore, the chances of him playing in The Hundred are described as “50-50,” reflecting the uncertainty surrounding his availability. Daniel Vettori, a key figure in the franchise, noted, “After we missed out on Adil Rashid, the priority was to get a spin bowler, and we didn’t think that quality was in the local market, so we had to jump overseas.” This emphasizes the strategic importance of Ahmed’s role.

Abrar Ahmed’s signing marks a significant shift in the participation of Pakistani players in Indian-owned franchises, showcasing the evolving landscape of cricket. However, details remain unconfirmed regarding his NOC status from the PCB.

As the tournament approaches, the cricketing community will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds and whether Ahmed will take the field for Sunrisers Leeds.
