cpim candidate list 2026 — IN news

The political landscape in West Bengal has undergone a notable shift with the release of the CPI(M) candidate list for the 2026 Assembly elections on March 16, 2026. Previously, the Left Front, which ruled the state for 34 years until 2011, faced a significant setback in the 2021 elections, failing to secure a single seat. This history set a backdrop of skepticism regarding the party’s future prospects.

However, the CPI(M) has now announced a total of 192 candidates for the 294 Assembly seats, including 28 women, indicating a strategic effort to rejuvenate its image and appeal to a broader electorate. Notable candidates include Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya contesting from Jadavpur and Minakshi Mukherjee from Uttarpara.

The decision to field Sabina Yasmin from Kaliganj is particularly poignant, following the tragic death of her daughter in political violence, reflecting the personal stakes involved in this election. Dipsita Dhar will also contest from North Dum Dum, further diversifying the party’s representation.

The elections are scheduled for April 23 and 29, 2026, with results to be announced on May 4, 2026. The Left Front, which includes the CPI, RSP, and AIFB, aims to reclaim its influence in West Bengal politics, a goal articulated by Biman Bose, who emphasized the need to combat “neo-Fascist forces” and revive Leftist politics in the state.

As the CPI(M) prepares for these elections, it will contest 142 seats, with the remaining seats allocated to its allies within the Left Front. This collaborative approach is seen as essential for mounting a credible challenge to the ruling parties.

Experts note that the success of the CPI(M) in these elections could hinge on its ability to connect with the electorate and address the hardships faced by the people, a sentiment echoed by Bose. He stated, “The fight this time is against the neo-Fascist forces in the country, the autocratic activities in our state, and the hardships faced by the people owing to these.”

With the announcement of the candidate list, the Left Front is positioning itself as a viable alternative in West Bengal, aiming to galvanize support and restore its former political dominance. The coming weeks will be crucial as the party finalizes candidates for the remaining seats, with Bose indicating that these will be announced shortly.

As the election date approaches, the political dynamics in West Bengal will undoubtedly evolve, and the effectiveness of the CPI(M)’s strategies will be put to the test. The party’s historical legacy and recent challenges create a complex backdrop for the upcoming elections, making it a focal point of interest for political analysts and voters alike.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the finalization of candidates for the remaining seats, but the CPI(M)’s proactive stance marks a significant moment in its electoral strategy.
