Matheesha Pathirana Faces Injury Setback
By Vikram Nair / 17.03.2026
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have decided not to seek replacements for injured players Harshit Rana and Matheesha Pathirana, significantly impacting their strategy for the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Harshit Rana has been ruled out for the entire season due to a knee injury, which he sustained earlier this year and required surgery for in February. His absence will be felt, as he took 19 wickets in IPL 2024 and 15 wickets in IPL 2025.
Matheesha Pathirana, who was also injured, has been withdrawn from the T20 World Cup squad. KKR is optimistic that he will recover and be available later in the IPL season, but details remain unconfirmed regarding his exact timeline for recovery.
Despite these setbacks, KKR believes they have sufficient Indian pace options within their squad to absorb the loss of Rana. The team has expressed confidence in their existing resources, with a strategy that emphasizes patience regarding Pathirana’s return.
KKR’s management stated, “KKR are prepared to ride out Harshit’s absence through existing squad depth and hold their nerve on Pathirana in the hope that he returns during the season.” This sentiment reflects their commitment to leveraging their current players rather than seeking external replacements.
In a recent move, KKR signed Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman, further solidifying their bowling lineup. The franchise had invested INR 18 crore to acquire Matheesha Pathirana, underscoring their expectations for his contributions to the team.
As KKR navigates these challenges, the focus will be on how well they can perform without two key players. The team’s depth will be tested, and their ability to adapt will be crucial in the coming matches.
With the IPL season ongoing, KKR’s strategy appears clear. They intend to rely on their current resources to cope with Harshit’s absence and remain patient regarding Pathirana’s availability. The next few weeks will be critical in determining how effectively KKR can manage these injuries while maintaining their competitive edge.
As the team prepares for upcoming matches, the situation remains fluid, and fans will be watching closely for updates on Pathirana’s recovery and the team’s performance in his absence.
