Rajya Sabha Election 2026 Haryana
How it unfolded
The political atmosphere in Haryana was charged as the state prepared for the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for March 17, 2026. With 90 members in the Haryana Assembly, the stakes were high for the major political parties, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress, both of which were vying for crucial seats in the upper house of Parliament. The elections were marked by strategic maneuvers, including Congress moving its MLAs to resorts in Himachal Pradesh to prevent dissent ahead of the voting.
As the election day approached, the BJP, which held 48 MLAs, and Congress, with 37 MLAs, were both confident of their chances. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), holding 2 seats, chose not to participate in the voting, leaving the contest primarily between the two dominant parties. Each candidate required 31 votes to secure a seat, making the election a closely watched event.
On the day of the election, the counting process faced significant delays due to objections raised by both the BJP and Congress. Allegations of cross-voting emerged, further complicating the situation. Ultimately, the results revealed a split verdict: Sanjay Bhatia from the BJP and Karamvir Singh Bauddh from Congress emerged victorious, each securing one seat in the Rajya Sabha.
However, the election was not without controversy. A total of five votes were declared invalid, including four from Congress and one from BJP, raising questions about the voting process. Nayab Singh Saini, a BJP leader, noted that independent candidate Satish Nandal, who was backed by the BJP, lost by a narrow margin, highlighting the competitive nature of the election.
The results of the Rajya Sabha elections reflect a fragile balance of power in Haryana. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, a senior Congress leader, commented on the internal divisions within his party, stating, “I will not name them, but people have understood, and the public will teach them a lesson.” This sentiment underscores the challenges Congress faces as it navigates its internal dynamics while competing against the BJP.
In the aftermath of the elections, B. K. Hariprasad, a Congress leader, warned that those involved in cross-voting would face consequences, indicating that the party is taking the allegations seriously. The BJP, with its substantial majority in the Assembly, remains a formidable force in Haryana politics, but the Congress’s ability to secure a seat demonstrates that it still holds significant influence.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the implications of this election will be felt in the coming months. The split verdict not only highlights the competitive nature of Haryana’s political environment but also sets the stage for future electoral battles. With both parties now reassessing their strategies, the focus will be on how they engage with their respective bases and address the challenges that lie ahead.
