ravi nair — IN news

The Supreme Court of India has declined to entertain a plea filed by journalist Ravi Nair, which challenged a notice issued by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch. This decision marks a significant development in Nair’s ongoing legal troubles, particularly in relation to a complaint made by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd concerning an article co-authored by him.

Nair was summoned to appear before the Crime Branch for a preliminary enquiry on February 19, 2026, as part of the investigation into the complaint. This notice follows Nair’s previous conviction in a criminal defamation case filed by Adani Enterprises Ltd, where he was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000.

The court found Nair guilty under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code for tweets and articles published between October 2020 and July 2021. The ruling emphasized that the imputations in his writings were framed in a manner that conveyed assertions of fact rather than speculative opinion, according to the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Mansa.

In addition to his legal battles, Nair’s situation unfolds against the backdrop of the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026, which aims to prevent fraudulent or coercive religious conversions. The bill mandates that individuals planning a religious conversion must provide authorities with a 60-day advance notice.

Unlawful conversion under the proposed law would be classified as a cognizable, non-bailable offence, punishable with imprisonment of up to seven years. This legislative move has sparked discussions about the implications for personal freedoms and religious practices in the region.

As Nair navigates these legal challenges, the outcomes remain uncertain. The implications of the Supreme Court’s decision and the ongoing investigations by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch could have lasting effects on his career and the broader landscape of journalism in India. Details remain unconfirmed.
