By Rohan Mehta / 17.03.2026
Sarfaraz Ahmed is remembered for leading Pakistan to their first Champions Trophy title in 2017. On March 15, 2026, he announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable 20-year career.
During his tenure, Sarfaraz captained Pakistan in 100 international matches across all formats, achieving a notable ODI win rate of 58 percent from 50 matches. He represented Pakistan in 54 Tests, 117 One-Day Internationals, and 61 Twenty20 Internationals, scoring a total of 6,164 runs, which included six centuries and 35 half-centuries.
Behind the stumps, he was a reliable wicketkeeper, taking 315 catches and completing 56 stumpings. His leadership extended beyond the senior team, as he also captained Pakistan’s U19 team to victory in the 2006 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
Under Sarfaraz’s captaincy, Pakistan achieved a world record of 11 consecutive T20I series victories, showcasing his ability to lead and inspire his team. His last international appearance was in a Test against Australia in December 2023.
Reflecting on his career, Sarfaraz stated, “It has been the greatest honour of my life to represent Pakistan.” He also expressed pride in seeing players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Hasan Ali grow into match-winners during his captaincy.
As the cricketing community reacts to his retirement, observers note that Sarfaraz’s legacy will continue to influence future generations of players. His contributions to Pakistan cricket, particularly in major tournaments, have solidified his status as one of the country’s notable cricketing figures.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any future roles Sarfaraz may take on within cricket, but his impact on the sport will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.
