umran malik — IN news
In

In a significant development for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Umran Malik is set to lead the team’s fast bowling attack in the upcoming IPL 2026 season. This announcement comes as KKR grapples with a series of injuries affecting key bowlers, including Harshit Rana and Akash Deep.

Malik, who has been sidelined for most of the past three years due to injuries, is eager to make a strong return. He expressed his determination, stating, “I want to play all the matches in this IPL and perform well, and set myself up for an India comeback.” His previous IPL season was notable, where he took 22 wickets in 14 matches while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022.

Currently, KKR’s bowling lineup is under strain, with Matheesha Pathirana recovering from an injury sustained during the T20 World Cup and Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman unavailable due to diplomatic issues. Malik’s return is seen as a crucial boost for the team as they navigate these challenges.

Malik has been a part of KKR since IPL 2025, having been bought for ₹75 lakhs during the auction. Despite being benched in the previous season, he is now looking to capitalize on his speed, which often exceeds 140 km/h, and has even recorded a fastest ball of 157 km/h in IPL.

Reflecting on his comeback, Malik shared, “I feel good and fresh on returning and I’m quite excited to be back playing.” He emphasized the importance of pace in his bowling strategy, stating, “Yes, pace is my weapon, which is something I’ll definitely use and fall back on. But with it, I will have to look at the other aspects too, like variations.”

Malik’s focus on improving his slower deliveries highlights his commitment to adapting his game to current trends in cricket, where variations are increasingly crucial. He noted, “From that perspective, the slower delivery carries importance for every bowler, I believe, especially in today’s times, the slower is the main delivery.”

As the IPL 2026 season approaches, Malik’s performance will not only be pivotal for KKR but also for his aspirations to reestablish himself in the Indian national team, having played 10 ODIs and eight T20Is for India previously.

With the season set to begin soon, the cricketing community is keenly watching Malik’s journey as he aims to overcome his injury setbacks and lead KKR’s bowling attack effectively.
