cicada covid variant in india — IN news
In

The Cicada COVID-19 variant, classified as BA.3.2 and part of the Omicron family, has emerged as a significant concern in India. This variant was first identified in South Africa in November 2024 and has since been detected in over 22 countries.

As of now, the Cicada variant carries approximately 75 mutations, with more than 50 of these located in the spike protein. This extensive mutation profile raises questions about its potential to evade immunity from previous infections or vaccinations.

Symptoms associated with the Cicada variant include cough, extreme fatigue, runny nose, headache, sore throat, mild fever, muscle and joint pain, loss of taste or smell, night sweats, and rash. However, it is important to note that the Cicada variant has not been confirmed to cause more severe illness compared to earlier variants.

The first confirmed case of the Cicada variant in the United States was reported in June 2025, and by January 2026, three patients had been confirmed, all of whom recovered. This variant’s spread is being closely monitored by health authorities.

Dr. Robert Hopkins Jr. stated, “It is possible we will see Cicada become the dominant strain in the U.S., but that is by no means certain.” This highlights the uncertainty surrounding the variant’s impact and prevalence.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasized the importance of monitoring the spread of BA.3.2, noting that it provides valuable information about the potential for this new SARS-CoV-2 lineage to evade immunity.

As the situation develops, health officials in India and around the world are on high alert. The emergence of the Cicada variant underscores the ongoing challenges posed by COVID-19 and its evolving strains.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the variant’s impact and its implications for public health. Continued vigilance and research are essential as the global community navigates this new phase of the pandemic.
