“Yawning plays a role in cleaning brain fluid, which would most likely happen close to bedtime,” said Professor Lynn Bilston from the University of New South Wales. Recent studies suggest that yawning may play a crucial role in brain regulation, challenging long-held beliefs about this common behavior.

Key findings:

  • Yawning may help clean and regulate the brain’s temperature.
  • Gaboon vipers yawn to realign their jaws after eating.
  • Yawning signatures are distinct for each individual.
  • Gaboon vipers have the longest fangs of any venomous snake on earth, measuring approximately two inches.
  • Gaboon viper venom can kill six adult humans with a single strike.

Gaboon vipers yawn to relax and realign their jaws. This behavior is not just limited to reptiles; it is observed across various species, including humans. Adam Martinac noted, “It’s almost like a fingerprint, so you could possibly identify someone just based on how they yawn.” Yawning remains very mysterious, even though it’s a primordial process that has been preserved throughout evolution.

The study included 22 participants and revealed that yawning might serve significant functions related to brain health. Researchers are exploring the connections between yawning behavior and neurological processes. These insights could reshape our understanding of evolutionary biology and animal behavior.
