Digvesh Rathi’s Controversial Celebrations in IPL 2026
Digvesh Rathi’s performance in the IPL 2026 season has been overshadowed by controversy surrounding his unique notebook celebration. The lead spinner for the Lucknow Super Giants took 14 wickets in 13 matches during IPL 2025, but his antics have led to significant repercussions.
Rathi was punished three times for his notebook celebration, which has reportedly annoyed opposing batters. His first offence in IPL 2025 resulted in a fine of 25% of his match fees, which was later increased to 50% for subsequent violations. He also received five demerit points under Article 2.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct, with four demerit points equating to one suspension point.
The heated altercation with Abhishek Sharma further escalated the situation, leading to Rathi receiving a one-match suspension. His demerit points will remain on record for 36 months, raising concerns about his future conduct and eligibility.
Despite the controversies, Rathi has expressed his commitment to being authentic on the field. He stated, “The only thing Rishabh bhai and the management have told me is ‘you continue being your most authentic self, but just don’t get banned.'” This support from his coach Justin Langer and captain Rishabh Pant highlights the team’s backing amid the turmoil.
Rathi’s economy rate in IPL 2025 was 8.25, showcasing his effectiveness as a bowler despite the distractions. He believes that celebrating his wickets is as valid as batters celebrating their milestones, saying, “I never meant any disrespect then or now. I just want to celebrate in my own way.”
As the IPL 2026 season progresses, Rathi’s ability to balance his on-field performance with his celebratory style remains a focal point for fans and analysts alike. The implications of his conduct could affect not only his career but also the dynamics within the Lucknow Super Giants.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further disciplinary actions or changes in Rathi’s approach to celebrations as the season unfolds.
