lyrid meteor shower — IN news

The Lyrid meteor shower peaks from April 21 to April 22. This celestial event offers a unique opportunity for stargazers in the Northern Hemisphere. The meteors are known for being fast and bright, often leaving glowing trails across the night sky.

The Lyrids have been observed for more than 2,700 years. They are among the oldest recorded meteor showers, with observations dating back to 687 BC. The meteors appear to originate near the constellation Lyra, close to its brightest star, Vega.

The Lyrids are the product of Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher. This comet sheds debris that enters Earth’s atmosphere, creating the stunning light displays we see as meteors. During optimal viewing conditions, observers can see up to 15–20 meteors per hour in the UK.

The meteor shower is active from April 16 to April 25. The best time for viewing is after midnight when the radiant rises higher in the sky. Observers should allow about 30 minutes for their eyes to adjust to darkness for optimal viewing.

Details remain unconfirmed about how weather conditions may affect visibility this year. However, clear skies will enhance the experience for those wishing to witness this annual spectacle.
