Voting Percentage in Tamil Nadu Reaches Record 82.24%

Tamil Nadu recorded a voter turnout of 82.24% in the latest polling update, setting a new record and surpassing the previous high of 78% in 2011.

Thirty out of thirty-eight districts reported over 80% voter turnout. Karur district led with an impressive 89%. Chennai also showed strong participation at 83.44%.

This turnout marks a significant increase from the 73.63% recorded in 2021, when Tamil Nadu had approximately 6.28 crore total voters.

The current total number of voters stands at 5.73 crore, following revisions that removed about 70 lakh names from the electoral rolls.

Tamil Nadu’s election officials noted, “Tamil Nadu has created a record turnout of 82.24% polling, according to the latest status available at 5 pm.” The western districts of the state reported more votes than others.

However, many voters faced challenges reaching their hometowns ahead of the vote. A notable complaint came from citizens attempting to travel to exercise their voting rights.

Vijay, a local resident, stated, “Thousands of citizens who have travelled from all over the world… have been left helpless due to the heavy requisitioning of buses and vehicles for poll duty.” This issue may have affected overall participation.

The historical context shows that in 2021, the DMK alliance won 159 seats, capturing 45.72% of the votes. Observers now look forward to analyzing how this record turnout impacts future political dynamics in Tamil Nadu.
