Voting percentage in west bengal 2026
The voter turnout in West Bengal’s 2026 elections reached an impressive 89.99%, surpassing the previous record of 80.4% from 2021 for the same seats. This surge in participation marks a notable shift in the electoral landscape.
Before this election, expectations were mixed. Many analysts anticipated a lower turnout due to various factors, including political tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC). However, the actual numbers defied those predictions.
As of April 29, the voter turnout by 5 PM showed significant engagement across various constituencies. Phase 1 concluded with a record turnout of 92.25%. In the second phase, Purba Bardhaman recorded the highest turnout at 94.06%.
This increased participation reflects broader public interest and engagement in the electoral process. District-wise data shows:
- Purba Bardhaman: 92.46%
- Hooghly: 90.34%
- Nadia: 90.28%
- Howrah: 89.44%
Mamata Banerjee criticized the BJP’s tactics, claiming they aimed to rig the election. She stated, “Central forces are supposed to guard the country’s borders, but instead they are working for a particular party.” This indicates ongoing tensions as both parties vie for control.
The electoral process was largely peaceful, with 1,448 candidates contesting across 142 assembly constituencies. The high voter turnout may have surprised many observers but also signifies a robust democratic engagement among voters.
