Faf du Plessis and Jonty Rhodes are taking a significant step into team ownership in the European T20 Premier League, aiming to develop local talent in Dutch cricket. The league features six city-based teams, including the Rotterdam Dockers, which Du Plessis co-owns and captains.

The inaugural edition of the ETPL will occur from August 26 to September 20. Du Plessis believes local Dutch players will be crucial for the success of his team. He stated, “It’s not your overseas players that win you competitions, it’s the local players.” This emphasis on homegrown talent aligns with the league’s goal to enhance cricket in Europe.

Rhodes echoed this sentiment, saying, “The ETPL offers exactly that, creating pathways to identify, nurture, and scale talent, and ultimately strengthening the game across Europe.” His involvement reflects a broader commitment to fostering cricket at the grassroots level.

The tournament is co-owned by Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan. Five of the six franchises for the ETPL have been sold, with one team still under negotiation. The total value of the franchises sold over a 10-year period amounts to £11.1 million.

Du Plessis has extensive experience in franchise leagues worldwide and sees great potential in the ETPL. He aims to leverage this experience to build a competitive team while also contributing to the development of local talent.

The Netherlands has had notable successes in white-ball cricket, having defeated teams like England and South Africa. The ETPL seeks to capitalize on this momentum by providing a platform for emerging players.

With 33 matches planned for the inaugural season, observers expect increased interest in cricket within Europe. The league could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the sport across the continent.
