Miami GP: Lando Norris Takes Pole Position
By Ananya Rao / 02.05.2026
Lando Norris achieved a historic pole position at the Miami Grand Prix on May 1, 2026, marking a significant shift in the Formula 1 season. This achievement ended Mercedes’ streak of dominance in pole positions.
Norris set a benchmark time of 1:27.869 during Sprint Qualifying. Kimi Antonelli qualified second, just two tenths behind Norris. Oscar Piastri secured third place, while Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen rounded out the top five.
Mercedes struggled during qualifying. George Russell placed sixth, and Lewis Hamilton followed in seventh. The performance gap was evident as Norris’s time was significantly faster than both drivers.
The results indicate a shift in competitive dynamics in Formula 1. McLaren’s upgrades played a crucial role in their improved performance at the Miami International Autodrome. This development raises questions about Mercedes’ ability to maintain its competitive edge.
Key qualifying results:
- Lando Norris – 1:27.869
- Kimi Antonelli – +0.222 seconds
- Oscar Piastri – +0.239 seconds
- Charles Leclerc – +0.370 seconds
- Max Verstappen – +0.592 seconds
George Russell commented on the surprising performance of McLaren and Ferrari, stating, “Pretty surprising how big a jump McLaren and Ferrari made. That’s pretty damn impressive.” Norris expressed satisfaction with his team’s progress, saying, “I feel very good. I’m very happy for the team.” He noted that significant work had gone into the upgrades.
This pole position is a pivotal moment for McLaren as they seek to challenge the established order in Formula 1. The Miami GP will serve as a critical test for all teams involved as they adapt to this new competitive landscape.
