The Indian Navy’s Mahendragiri frigate, featuring advanced stealth technology, was officially handed over on May 1, 2026. This event marks a significant milestone in indigenous naval capabilities in India.

Before this handover, expectations were high for the Indian Navy’s modernization efforts. The Mahendragiri is the sixth and final ship built under Project 17A. Its construction reflects India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense.

The Mahendragiri measures 149 meters long and weighs approximately 6,670 tons. It can reach speeds of up to 28 knots and conduct naval operations for up to 45 days. These specifications enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy.

Key features of the Mahendragiri frigate:

  • Equipped with eight BrahMos supersonic anti-ship missiles
  • Includes state-of-the-art anti-submarine warfare systems
  • Approximately 75% indigenous content used in construction

The handover coincided with other significant events for the Indian Navy. On the same day, the Indian Navy released the SSR Medical Admit Card for Agniveer recruitment. The written examination is scheduled for May 16, 2026.

A delegation led by Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi is currently on a goodwill visit to Myanmar until May 6, 2026. This visit aims to strengthen ties between India and Myanmar.

This development signifies not just technological advancement but also India’s growing maritime influence in the region. The Mahendragiri frigate exemplifies India’s push towards greater self-reliance and modernization in defense.

The next steps include further integration of advanced technologies into the fleet and ongoing recruitment efforts through initiatives like Agniveer.
