“This drops Leclerc from sixth on the road to eighth in the final results,” said a source after the race. Charles Leclerc’s 20-second penalty dramatically altered the final standings of the 2026 F1 Miami Grand Prix on May 3. The event took place in Miami, featuring intense competition among top drivers.
Leclerc took the lead at the start of the Miami Grand Prix. Kimi Antonelli was the polesitter but fell to second place shortly after. Max Verstappen spun out during the opening lap, dropping him down the order.
Throughout the race, Lewis Hamilton made contact with Franco Colapinto. Leclerc received a time penalty from the stewards for leaving the track multiple times during right-handed corners on the final lap. He finished eighth after serving his penalty.
Key race results:
- Leclerc finished in eighth place.
- Hamilton moved up to sixth.
- Colapinto achieved a career-best seventh position.
Leclerc’s spin and collision with the Turn 3 wall on the final lap did not hinder his ability to continue racing. Investigations involving George Russell and Verstappen did not result in penalties, keeping their standings intact.
The Miami Grand Prix showcased many dramatic moments, highlighting both skill and misfortune among competitors. As teams analyze their performances, attention will shift to upcoming races in the season.
