Aston Villa vs Sunderland: Match Report
By Ananya Rao / 20.04.2026
“I am so, so happy,” said Aston Villa manager Unai Emery after his team’s dramatic win over Sunderland.
Aston Villa triumphed 4-3 at Villa Park on April 19, 2026. The match featured a total of seven goals and showcased both teams’ attacking prowess. Ollie Watkins scored two goals for Aston Villa, further solidifying his reputation as a consistent scorer.
Chris Rigg marked a significant moment for Sunderland by scoring their first Premier League goal since May 2017. Yet, it was Tammy Abraham who clinched the victory with a goal in injury time—three minutes into stoppage time.
The match had implications for both teams. Aston Villa is now ten points clear of sixth-place Chelsea and has qualified for the Champions League with this win. Meanwhile, Sunderland remains in contention for European qualification with 46 points but needs one more point to ensure their survival in the Premier League.
Emery expressed the need for improvements, stating, “We need strikers and goalkeepers.” His focus now shifts to the next challenge as Aston Villa prepares to face Fulham next Saturday.
Sunderland’s manager Régis Le Bris reflected on the game, saying, “I’m disappointed because we had the opportunity to win the game.” His team fought back from a deficit twice during the match, equalizing at 3-3 after quick goals from Trai Hume and Wilson Isidor.
The atmosphere at Villa Park was relaxed as both teams had achieved their season goals before kick-off. This allowed players to showcase their skills without the pressure of relegation or playoff implications weighing heavily on them.
Ollie Watkins continues to impress; he has scored more than ten goals in all six of his Premier League seasons. His performance against Sunderland was no exception.
As both teams look ahead, Aston Villa will aim to maintain momentum while Sunderland seeks to secure its place in the league. They will host Nottingham Forest on Friday in hopes of clinching that crucial point.
