Labour Day rallies are set for May 1 as workers around the world protest against rising energy prices and advocate for workers’ rights. These demonstrations coincide with fears of a global recession.

Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day or May Day, honors the contributions of workers to society and economies. The holiday began in the US during the 1880s when laborers protested for an eight-hour workday. Today, many Indian states observe it as a public holiday.

Significant rallies are expected in South America, Europe, and Asia. In the US, Labour Day is not a public holiday, but protests will occur under the slogan “workers over billionaires.” Trade unions aim to emphasize dignity and fair treatment for all workers.

The International Trade Union Confederation reported alarming wealth concentration. Some CEOs earn over $100 million in pay and bonuses. This disparity fuels concerns about income inequality.

Renato Reyes from a Filipino trade union stated, “There will be a louder call for higher wages and economic relief because of the unprecedented spikes in fuel prices.” Josua Mata emphasized that local situations are intertwined with global crises.

As Labour Day approaches, observers expect protests to grow louder. The need for economic relief is paramount amidst rising costs. The European Trade Union Confederation remarked, “Working people refuse to pay the price for Donald Trump’s war in the Middle East.”
